What FSC Certification Covers
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) uses certification and product labels to track wood, paper, and other forest materials from approved sources through the companies that handle them. Think of it as a receipt chain for forest fiber. Each certified business must keep the records intact before the next business can pass along an FSC claim.
Why the FSC Tree Does Not Rate the Whole Product
Many people read any FSC tree logo as proof that the whole product is environmentally friendly. The label makes a narrower promise. It describes the forest-based material and the chain-of-custody controls used to move that material through the supply chain. The FSC 100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Recycled labels do not make the same claim.
What a Valid FSC Label Proves
A valid FSC label shows that the forest-based material was handled under FSC chain-of-custody rules. FSC 100% means the virgin forest material came from FSC-certified forests. FSC Recycled means the forest material is 100% recycled. FSC Mix can contain material from FSC-certified forests plus recycled material or FSC controlled wood. The license code connects the on-product label to the organization authorized to use it.
What FSC Certification Does Not Measure
FSC certification does not measure the product's energy use, manufacturing pollution, shipping footprint, durability, or disposal result. An FSC Mix label does not mean every fiber came from an FSC-certified forest. A company certificate does not automatically cover every product it sells. A tree logo by itself is not enough when the license code is missing, inactive, assigned to a different organization, or outside the product scope.
How FSC Chain of Custody Is Checked
FSC-accredited certification bodies audit participating organizations against forest-management or chain-of-custody requirements. The public record can show the organization, certificate status, certificate type, scope, and product groups. To check a product, start with the license code printed near the label. Search that code in FSC's public tools, confirm that the record is active, and compare the listed organization and scope with the product in front of you.
FSC 100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Recycled
The label name tells you which forest-material claim is being made. It does not grade every environmental effect of the finished product.

Four Steps to Check an FSC Label
A printed logo is the start of the check. The license code and certificate record tell you whether the claim connects to an active holder and matching product scope.
- Read the label type Identify FSC 100%, FSC Mix, or FSC Recycled. Each label describes a different combination of forest material.
- Find the license code Look near the FSC tree for a code that begins with FSC C followed by numbers. A plain tree logo without a code cannot complete the check.
- Search the FSC record Enter the license code in FSC's public certificate search. Confirm the organization and make sure the record is active.
- Match the scope to the product Check the certificate type and product groups. A valid company certificate does not mean every item that company sells carries an FSC claim.
FSC Labels People Commonly Misread
- All three FSC labels mean the same thing. FSC 100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Recycled describe different forest-material inputs.
- FSC Mix means every source is FSC-certified. The mix may also contain recycled material or FSC controlled wood.
- Controlled wood is the same as FSC-certified forest material. FSC describes it as material checked to avoid specified unacceptable sources, but it does not come from an FSC-certified forest.
- A company certificate automatically covers every product it sells. The certificate scope and product group still need to match.
- FSC certification evaluates the finished product's entire environmental footprint. Its central job is forest management and material traceability.
- A printed tree logo verifies itself. A proper FSC label includes a license code that can be checked against FSC's public records.
